RIYADH, Sunday, March 8, 2026 (WNP): UNESCO marked International Women’s Day on Sunday by highlighting global efforts to empower women in emerging technologies, including initiatives led by the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) in Riyadh.

Operating under UNESCO’s auspices, ICAIRE is working to build a more inclusive global ecosystem for artificial intelligence while supporting women’s participation in advanced technologies and innovation. The observance emphasized the importance of equal access to education and opportunities for women across development sectors.

Speaking on the occasion, UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany stressed that empowering women to take on leadership roles in public institutions, gain access to economic resources, and actively participate in cultural and scientific life is essential for achieving sustainable development worldwide.

“Women’s full participation in society—particularly in science, technology, and innovation—is key to building more inclusive and resilient societies,” he said.

As part of these efforts, ICAIRE has launched several initiatives aimed at advancing women’s roles in artificial intelligence. Among them is the “Elevate” program, which focuses on developing women’s technical skills and leadership in AI.

According to organizers, the program has attracted around 30,000 participants from more than 100 countries, offering advanced training opportunities designed to strengthen expertise in artificial intelligence and related fields.

The initiative also aims to create a global network of women leaders in technology, promoting collaboration, innovation, and responsible development of artificial intelligence systems.

Officials say such programs are intended to reduce gender gaps in the technology sector and encourage greater female representation in fields that are expected to shape the future global economy.
