TEHRAN, Sunday, March 8, 2026 (WNP): Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei has been elected as the third Supreme Leader of Iran, following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, marking a historic and controversial leadership transition during a period of intense regional conflict.
The decision was announced by the Assembly of Experts, an 88-member clerical body responsible under Iran’s constitution for selecting the country’s supreme leader.
The council confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei was chosen through a decisive vote to lead the Islamic Republic after the position became vacant.
The leadership transition followed the killing of Ali Khamenei in an airstrike near Tehran on February 28, 2026, during the ongoing regional war involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
After his death, an interim leadership council temporarily assumed the duties of the supreme leader until the Assembly of Experts convened to elect a permanent successor.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, is a Shiite cleric who spent decades working within the office of his father and was widely viewed as a powerful figure behind the scenes in Iran’s political and security structure.
Born in the northeastern city of Mashhad, he studied Islamic theology in the seminaries of Qom and maintained close ties with conservative clerics and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Iran’s political and military establishment, including senior government officials and the IRGC, quickly pledged allegiance to the new leader, calling for national unity during wartime.
Analysts say the new leader’s policies will be closely watched internationally, as his leadership could shape Iran’s future direction on regional security, nuclear policy, and relations with the West.
