ABU DHABI, Thursday, May 7, 2026 (WNP): President of the United Arab Emirates Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Thursday inspected an Egyptian fighter jet detachment stationed in the UAE amid heightened tensions in the region.
According to the official Emirates News Agency, the two leaders reviewed the operational readiness of the Egyptian unit and discussed efforts aimed at strengthening preparedness and defence capabilities in light of evolving regional challenges.
President Sisi arrived in Abu Dhabi earlier in the day, where he was received by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed at Abu Dhabi International Airport, according to a statement issued by the Egyptian presidency.
During the meeting, Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s solidarity with the UAE and emphasized Cairo’s support for the country’s security and stability. He also condemned what he described as Iranian attacks on Emirati sovereignty.
“These attacks constitute a blatant violation of international law and the United Nations Charter and represent a serious escalation threatening regional and global stability,” Sisi said, stressing the need for intensified diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis through dialogue and negotiations.
For his part, Sheikh Mohamed expressed appreciation for Egypt’s support and underscored the UAE’s commitment to continued coordination and cooperation with Cairo on regional and international issues.
The two leaders also discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in trade, investment, and economic cooperation, while emphasizing the importance of preserving the unity and sovereignty of regional states.
According to the statement, both sides agreed on the need to intensify consultations regarding ongoing regional crises in a manner that safeguards national institutions and protects the resources and interests of peoples across the region.
Regional tensions have remained high since the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory actions from Tehran and causing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation came into effect on April 8, although negotiations held in Islamabad did not result in a permanent agreement. The truce was later extended by United States President Donald Trump without a specified deadline.
The UAE earlier reported drone and missile attacks allegedly launched from Iran, claims that Tehran has denied.
