ALGIERS, Monday, April 13, 2026 (WNP): Pope Leo XIV on Monday called for global commitment to peace, justice, and forgiveness, emphasizing that lasting harmony among nations can only be achieved through reconciliation rather than conflict.

Speaking at the Martyrs’ Monument during the first day of his Apostolic Journey to Africa, the Pope said that peace must go beyond the mere absence of war and reflect justice and human dignity.

“God desires peace for every nation — a peace rooted in justice and dignity,” he said, adding that true peace enables societies to move forward with a reconciled spirit.

The Pope underscored that forgiveness remains central to achieving such peace, acknowledging that while it is often difficult, it is essential to break cycles of resentment and conflict.

He warned against perpetuating hatred across generations, urging the international community to avoid “adding resentment upon resentment” as global conflicts continue to rise.

Highlighting the moral dimension of peace, the Pope said that the real struggle for liberation would only succeed when inner peace is achieved.

“The future belongs to men and women of peace,” he said, expressing confidence that justice would ultimately prevail over injustice and that violence, despite appearances, would not have the final word.

His remarks come at a time of heightened global tensions, reinforcing the Vatican’s continued call for dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful resolution of conflicts worldwide.
