ISLAMABAD, Friday, February 20, 2026 (WNP): The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) has announced the opening of applications for the prestigious 2027 Fulbright Student Program, offering fully funded opportunities for Pakistani students to pursue graduate studies at leading universities in the United States.
Funded by the U.S. government in partnership with the Government of Pakistan, the merit-based scholarship covers tuition fees, living expenses, health insurance and international air travel.
The program adopts a broad definition of merit, evaluating not only academic performance and test scores but also leadership potential and applicants’ commitment to contributing to Pakistan’s development in ways that align with U.S. policy objectives.
USEFP officials said the Fulbright Program is open to candidates from all academic disciplines, with particular encouragement for applicants in sciences, technology, artificial intelligence, trade, economics and natural resource management. While clinical medicine is not eligible, non-clinical public health fields are welcome.
The application portal is currently open, with a submission deadline of April 1, 2026.
Highlighting the program’s significance, Heidi Smith, Director of Public Engagement at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, described Fulbright as one of America’s most enduring exchange initiatives.
“Through it, we are investing in Pakistan’s next generation of leaders, entrepreneurs and changemakers,” she said, noting that Pakistani alumni are actively transforming their communities and addressing critical social and economic challenges.
Smith added that educational and cultural exchanges remain central to strengthening bilateral ties, particularly as the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its independence.
Since 2005, more than 3,000 Pakistani students have received Fulbright scholarships for graduate study in the United States. Alumni have gone on to serve in civic leadership roles, government service, academia, and the private sector, contributing to economic growth and institutional development in Pakistan.
Many graduates continue to collaborate with American research institutions, businesses and technology hubs after returning home, reinforcing knowledge exchange and long-term partnerships between the two countries.
In a message to prospective applicants, USEFP Executive Director Dr. Peter Moran encouraged students nationwide to apply, calling Fulbright Pakistan’s premier academic exchange opportunity.
“For 75 years, USEFP has nurtured Pakistani talent and built enduring connections with American institutions,” he said. “These partnerships not only advance academic excellence and innovative research but also address global challenges and promote shared prosperity.”
Established in 1950 as a binational commission by the governments of the United States and Pakistan, USEFP has facilitated exchange opportunities for more than 9,000 Pakistanis and nearly 1,000 Americans. Its mission centers on fostering mutual understanding and strengthening people-to-people ties through education.
The officials said the continued expansion of academic exchanges reflects the resilience of U.S.–Pakistan relations, underscoring education as a cornerstone of long-term cooperation and shared progress.
