KUWAIT CITY, Wednesday, June 3, 2026 (WNP): Kuwait on Wednesday summoned the acting chargé d’affaires of the Iranian Embassy and handed over an official protest note over continued Iranian attacks against the country, while also announcing a reduction in the Iranian diplomatic mission and the expulsion of two embassy officials.

According to a statement issued by Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister Ambassador Hamad Al-Mashaan met acting Iranian chargé d’affaires Hamed Hamid Yaqoubi Far and conveyed Kuwait’s strong condemnation of the ongoing missile and drone attacks targeting the country.

The ministry said Kuwait had decided to reduce the number of Iranian embassy personnel and declared two members of the diplomatic mission persona non grata, ordering them to leave Kuwaiti territory within 24 hours.

Ambassador Al-Mashaan said the decision followed continued Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks, including strikes launched early Wednesday that targeted several civilian facilities and vital installations, among them Kuwait International Airport.

The attacks resulted in the death of one person, injuries to dozens of civilians and material damage to key facilities and diplomatic premises, according to the statement.

Kuwait said the attacks constituted a blatant violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as a breach of the Charter of the United Nations, international law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 2817.

The deputy foreign minister reiterated Kuwait’s strongest condemnation of the attacks and reaffirmed the country’s categorical rejection of any hostile use of its territory or airspace against any state.

He also rejected what he described as Iranian allegations regarding Kuwait’s involvement in regional hostilities, saying such claims were baseless and unsupported by evidence.

“Repeating these allegations cannot in any way justify the attacks carried out against Kuwaiti territory and its civilian and vital facilities,” he said.

Ambassador Al-Mashaan further stressed Kuwait’s inherent right to self-defence and to take all necessary measures to safeguard its sovereignty, security, territory, airspace, citizens and residents in accordance with international law.

The diplomatic measures mark a significant escalation in tensions between Kuwait and Iran amid continued regional instability and growing international concern over attacks targeting civilian infrastructure in the Gulf region.
