RIYADH, March 7, 2026 (WNP): Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Staff, Syed Asim Munir, held a high-level meeting with Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman during his recent visit to Saudi Arabia, with discussions focusing on the evolving regional security environment and strengthening bilateral defense cooperation.

According to official sources, the meeting addressed growing security concerns in the Middle East, including recent drone and missile attacks reported against Saudi territory. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding Saudi Arabia’s security under the Pakistan–Saudi Strategic Military Defense Agreement (SMDA), emphasizing continued coordination and cooperation between the two countries.

During the talks, the leaders stressed the importance of de-escalation and regional stability. They underscored the need for Iran, described as a brotherly Islamic nation, to avoid actions that could undermine peace efforts and heighten tensions across the region.

Shortly after the meeting in Riyadh, Iranian authorities announced that they would refrain from targeting neighboring Islamic countries. The statement has been viewed by some observers as a constructive step toward reducing tensions and promoting stability in the Middle East.

International affairs analysts say the timing of Iran’s announcement has drawn attention to Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement in the region. They note that Islamabad has sought to maintain a balanced approach, engaging with multiple stakeholders while encouraging restraint and dialogue.

Pakistan’s government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has repeatedly emphasized diplomacy and regional cooperation as the most effective means of addressing security challenges.

Experts believe Pakistan’s sustained diplomatic outreach and defense dialogue with regional partners could contribute to confidence-building efforts and help create space for broader diplomatic initiatives aimed at preserving peace and stability in a region facing complex geopolitical tensions.
