ISLAMABAD, Monday, March 2, 2026 (WNP): President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and members of Pakistan’s parliament have paid tribute to the late Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, following his death in a joint U.S.–Israeli airstrike, expressing condolences and emphasizing the importance of upholding international norms.
In statements released on social media platform X and through official channels, the prime minister said the government and people of Pakistan “join the people of Iran in their hour of grief and sorrow” and extended sincere condolences on Khamenei’s martyrdom.
He highlighted Pakistan’s concern over “violation of the norms of international law,” asserting that “heads of state and government should not be targeted.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz prayed for the departed soul and asked Allah Almighty to grant the Iranian people the courage and strength to bear the “irreparable loss,” reflecting Islamabad’s long-standing diplomatic ties with Tehran and its emphasis on stability in the region.
Members of the National Assembly and Senate also paid tribute to the Iranian leader, acknowledging his influence in shaping regional politics over the decades. While reactions varied across the political spectrum, many parliamentarians underscored Pakistan’s historical relations with Iran and called for de-escalation and respect for international law amid rising tensions.
The expressions of condolence from Pakistan’s leadership come amid intense domestic and regional unrest following the escalation of hostilities after Khamenei’s reported death, which has sparked protests and heightened security measures across Pakistan.
President Asif Ali Zardari also conveyed heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Iran, saying that Pakistan stands with the Iranian nation in this moment of grief and shares in their loss. He described the passing of such a significant leader as deeply felt across the Muslim world and prayed for patience and resilience for the Iranian people.
The tributes from Islamabad reflect the close diplomatic and cultural ties between Pakistan and Iran, even as the broader Middle East faces heightened instability. Pakistan’s response underscores its commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts and adherence to international norms amidst a rapidly unfolding crisis.
