ANKARA, Thursday, May 7, 2026 (WNP): Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Friday bestowed the State Order of the Republic of Türkiye upon Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during a special ceremony held at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

The “State Order Award Ceremony” took place ahead of an official dinner hosted by President Erdoğan in honour of President Tebboune during his visit to Türkiye.

Addressing the ceremony, President Erdoğan said he was pleased to witness the strengthening bonds of brotherhood and friendship between Türkiye and Algeria, relations which he noted span nearly five centuries.

He said bilateral ties had reached their highest level in the history of the Turkish Republic with the sincere support of President Tebboune, adding that both sides had successfully completed the first meeting of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council mechanism, elevated to a strategic level during Erdoğan’s visit to Algeria in 2023.

The Turkish president said several agreements were signed during the visit to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries in various sectors.

Praising Tebboune’s leadership and “New Algeria Vision,” Erdoğan said Algeria was emerging as a prominent regional power under his leadership.

“My dear brother, with your exceptional leadership, which paved the way for our relations to reach their current excellent level, you have demonstrated a sincere and determined will to further strengthen the bonds of friendship and brotherhood between us,” Erdoğan said.

He termed the State Order, Türkiye’s highest state honour, a symbol of the unwavering brotherhood between the two nations and thanked Tebboune for previously awarding him Algeria’s Athir Order.

President Tebboune expressed gratitude for receiving the honour, saying he was proud to be decorated with the State Order of Türkiye.

“I am very proud to be honored with the State Order,” Tebboune said while addressing the ceremony.

Describing Türkiye as a “brotherly” and “ancient” country, the Algerian president said the visit marked another important step in deepening strategic cooperation between the two nations.

He said the first meeting of the Algeria-Türkiye High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council laid the foundations for a broader and more comprehensive partnership.

Tebboune said the honour reflected the shared determination of both countries to build a model partnership based on intensive cooperation and common ambitions across multiple sectors.

Highlighting regional developments, he said Türkiye and Algeria were contributing to efforts aimed at promoting peace and security amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and Gulf region.

The Algerian president also announced that it would be a great honour for Algeria to confer the country’s highest National Order of Merit upon President Erdoğan in recognition of his efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.

He thanked the Turkish leadership for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his delegation during the visit.
