ISLAMABAD, Monday, March 9, 2026 (WNP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said the entire Middle East region, including Iran, is currently engulfed in a severe conflict, stressing that Pakistan is making every possible effort to promote restraint and resolve tensions through diplomacy.
Addressing the nation, the prime minister said Pakistan is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in the region and is working with international partners to ensure that disputes are addressed through dialogue and diplomatic channels rather than further escalation.
He noted that while the region faces rising tensions, Pakistan is also confronting security challenges on its western borders, where terrorist groups continue to pose threats. Sharif praised the country’s armed forces for their bravery and sacrifices in countering terrorism and safeguarding national security.
The prime minister expressed deep sorrow over the deaths resulting from Israeli attacks in Iran, including the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, members of his family, and other Iranian civilians.
Sharif said the government and people of Pakistan strongly condemn the attacks, describing them as unacceptable acts of aggression. He also condemned attacks reported in several other countries across the region, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Turkey, and Azerbaijan.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with Muslim countries and called for collective efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
The prime minister also addressed the recent increase in petroleum prices, describing the decision as extremely difficult but unavoidable in light of global market pressures caused by the ongoing conflict.
Sharif said the government had received recommendations for a much larger increase in fuel prices but chose a more moderate adjustment to reduce the burden on the public.
He warned that global oil prices may continue to rise in the coming days due to the regional crisis, which could lead to further increases in domestic fuel prices. However, he assured citizens that the government is working tirelessly to find ways to shield the public from the full impact of these increases.
“We are engaged in constant consultations and efforts day and night to manage this challenge,” the prime minister said. “God willing, I will not disappoint the people of Pakistan.”
The address comes at a time when escalating tensions in the Middle East have begun affecting global energy markets, raising concerns about economic pressures on energy-importing countries such as Pakistan.
