Ambassador Irfan Neziroglu meets Energy Minister Awais Leghari; Turkish investors invited to explore opportunities in Pakistan’s power sector
ISLAMABAD, Friday, September 18, 2026 (WNP): Ambassador of Türkiye to Pakistan Dr. Irfan Neziroglu called on Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari on Friday and discussed ongoing reforms in Pakistan’s power sector, progress on the privatisation of Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and opportunities for greater Turkish investment in the energy sector.
The meeting also focused on strengthening institutional and technical cooperation between Pakistan and Türkiye and expanding the participation of Turkish companies in Pakistan’s power-sector development.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed measures completed by the government and progress made in the DISCOs privatisation process.
Minister Awais Leghari said the Power Division had completed the required policy, reform and institutional work for the privatisation of DISCOs, while the formal process was now being taken forward through the relevant forum and the Privatisation Commission.
He said the Government of Pakistan was pursuing comprehensive reforms aimed at improving the performance of the electricity distribution system, ensuring financial sustainability and better governance, and enhancing service delivery to consumers through effective private-sector participation.
The Federal Minister noted that Pakistan-Türkiye cooperation in the energy sector was already built on strong foundations. Referring to three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed between key energy-sector institutions of Pakistan and Türkiye during his visit to Türkiye, he said the agreements had established a strong framework for institutional cooperation in electricity markets, transmission and distribution.
Leghari welcomed the interest and participation of Turkish companies in the DISCOs privatisation process, saying their experience and expertise in the energy sector could contribute significantly to Pakistan’s power-sector reforms.
He said Pakistan greatly appreciated the continued interest of Turkish investors in the privatisation process and their engagement with relevant institutions.
The minister emphasised that cooperation between Pakistan and Türkiye in the energy sector was no longer limited to the exchange of experience and information but was progressing towards stronger institutional linkages, technical cooperation and new investment opportunities.
He invited Turkish investors to fully explore opportunities available in Pakistan’s power sector and participate in the country’s ongoing reform and investment initiatives.
Ambassador Irfan Neziroglu appreciated the ongoing reforms in Pakistan’s power sector and the measures being taken to promote private-sector participation.
He said Turkish companies had a keen interest in investment opportunities in Pakistan’s energy sector and added that the participation of Turkish investors in the DISCOs privatisation process would further strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries.
The Ambassador expressed his commitment to further promoting institutional cooperation between Pakistan and Türkiye in the energy sector and strengthening engagement with relevant Turkish companies and institutions.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to further strengthen engagement between the relevant institutions of Pakistan and Türkiye to advance energy-sector reforms, investment, technical cooperation and private-sector participation.
