NEW YORK, Friday, October 24, 2025 (WNP): Marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, world leaders have called for renewed global solidarity to tackle pressing global challenges that transcend national boundaries, including conflict, poverty, inequality, and climate change.
In a message on United Nations Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged nations to “recommit to solving problems no nation can solve alone,” emphasizing that collective action remains the cornerstone of global peace and progress.
“For 80 years, the UN has worked to forge peace, tackle poverty and hunger, advance human rights, and build a more sustainable world,” Guterres said. “Now, more than ever, the world must stand together and act as one.”
Echoing the Secretary-General’s sentiments, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk reflected on the enduring vision that inspired the founding of the organization in 1945.
“Eighty years ago, the UN was born from a simple yet powerful vision: peace, dignity, and human rights for all,” Türk said. “These values are being tested every day—but we must not give up. Let’s stand together to defend our shared values and build the world we envision.”
United Nations Day, observed annually on October 24, commemorates the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945, symbolizing the birth of the international body dedicated to promoting peace, cooperation, and human rights among nations.
As the UN marks eight decades of global service, both leaders reiterated the need for collective resolve and renewed multilateralism to address the world’s most urgent challenges—from humanitarian crises to climate action—ensuring that the spirit of unity envisioned in 1945 continues to guide the global community forward.
