LONDON, Monday, June 15, 2026 (WNP): British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, describing it as a major step toward ending the conflict, restoring regional stability and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement, Starmer congratulated U.S. President Donald Trump and mediators from Pakistan, Qatar and other countries for their contributions to the breakthrough, saying the development reflected the progress long sought by the international community through efforts aimed at de-escalation.

He said attention must now focus on the full implementation of the memorandum of understanding to ensure the Strait of Hormuz is reopened and remains permanently accessible, while the detailed elements of the nuclear agreement are finalized.

The British prime minister said the United Kingdom stood ready to support the technical negotiations that would follow and would work with international partners to help ensure that the agreement evolves into a durable and lasting peace.

Starmer stressed the importance of restoring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, saying it was necessary to begin easing the severe economic consequences that had affected families in Britain and around the world over recent months.

He said the UK would continue working with its partners to support the implementation of the agreement, including, if required, through a defensive and independent multilateral mission being planned with France. He noted that such efforts could include support for mine-clearance operations carried out through mutually agreed arrangements.

The prime minister emphasized that for peace to endure, all commitments made under the agreement—particularly those relating to Iran’s nuclear programme—must be robust, verifiable and fully implemented.

Reaffirming Britain’s longstanding position, Starmer said Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon, adding that strict compliance with the agreed commitments would be essential for maintaining regional and international security.

The statement comes as world leaders continue to welcome the Iran-US agreement, which has been widely viewed as a significant diplomatic breakthrough with the potential to reduce tensions in the Middle East and safeguard global economic stability.
