ISLAMABAD, Thursday, May 14, 2026 (WNP): Discussions are reportedly underway on expanding the Pakistan–Saudi Arabia Mutual Defense Agreement into a broader regional strategic framework involving Türkiye and Qatar, a development being viewed by regional and international observers as a potentially significant shift in the regional security and geopolitical landscape.
According to diplomatic and strategic circles, the proposed expansion aims to strengthen cooperation among the four countries in areas including defence coordination, intelligence sharing, regional security, economic connectivity, technological collaboration, and strategic stability.
The evolving framework, informally being described in some regional discussions as a “Golden Square” alliance comprising Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Türkiye, and Qatar, is being seen as an effort to enhance collective regional capabilities through closer coordination and shared strategic interests.
Observers believe the initiative reflects a broader regional aspiration for indigenous security cooperation and greater strategic autonomy amid rapidly changing geopolitical realities and emerging security challenges.
They note that the proposed arrangement, if materialized, could contribute toward strengthening regional deterrence, promoting stability, and deepening political and economic cooperation among key Muslim countries with growing regional influence.
The development also aligns with increasing trends toward multidimensional partnerships encompassing defence, digital connectivity, innovation, trade, and institutional collaboration.
Strategic experts further view the initiative as part of a wider effort by regional countries to pursue balanced engagement with global powers while safeguarding their collective interests through coordinated diplomacy and cooperation.
The discussions have gained particular attention following the signing of the landmark Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA) between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in Riyadh on September 17, 2025, which significantly enhanced bilateral security and strategic coordination between the two brotherly countries.
