PM Shehbaz, Iranian President agree to Islamabad Talks as ceasefire diplomacy gains momentum

ISLAMABAD, Wednesday, April 8, 2026 (WNP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during which both leaders discussed the evolving regional situation and efforts to advance peace following the Iran–U.S. ceasefire.

During the over 45-minute conversation, described as warm and cordial, the prime minister expressed deep appreciation for the Iranian leadership’s “wisdom and sagacity” in agreeing to the ceasefire.

He also thanked Tehran for accepting Pakistan’s offer to host negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America in Islamabad later this week.

The prime minister also conveyed his respects to Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

President Pezeshkian, in his remarks, appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in facilitating the temporary ceasefire and extended best wishes to the people of Pakistan.

He confirmed that Iran would participate in the upcoming negotiations in Islamabad aimed at reaching a broader and lasting agreement.

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact as diplomatic engagements continue, reflecting a shared commitment to sustaining momentum toward peace and stability in the region.
