HALIFAX, Saturday, December 27, 2025 (WNP): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Halifax on Saturday to hold talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, as Kyiv seeks sustained international support amid intensified Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Speaking after his arrival, President Zelenskyy thanked Prime Minister Carney for the meeting and confirmed that discussions were being held in coordination with European partners. He expressed deep appreciation for Canada’s continued backing of Ukraine, particularly its support for strengthening air defence capabilities.
“Today, I am in Canada, together with Prime Minister Mark Carney, just as agreed. Together, we are speaking with our friends from Europe,” Zelenskyy said. “I am grateful for all the support for Ukraine, especially the support for air defence.”
The Ukrainian president strongly condemned Russia’s ongoing attacks, saying Moscow continues to target civilians and urban centres while rejecting diplomatic initiatives. He noted that Russia had turned down proposals for a Christmas ceasefire and instead escalated its missile and drone strikes.
“Russia keeps tormenting our cities and our people,” Zelenskyy said. “This is a clear signal of how diplomacy is viewed there — not seriously enough.”
Zelenskyy stressed that the current situation underscores the need for both increased international assistance to Ukraine and stronger pressure on Russia to halt its aggression.
He also welcomed Canada’s announcement of a new assistance package for Ukraine, calling it an important step at a critical time. “It is important that Canada has announced a new assistance package today, and it is important that we share common positions on many key issues,” he said.
The Halifax meeting reflects Canada’s continued diplomatic and military engagement with Ukraine, as Kyiv works with Western allies to bolster its defences and push for accountability amid the ongoing conflict.
