UNITED NATIONS, Tuesday, July 22, 2025 (WNP): In a major diplomatic achievement, the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution aimed at strengthening global mechanisms for the peaceful settlement of disputes.

The landmark resolution was passed during a session chaired by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, as part of Pakistan’s presidency of the Security Council for the month of July.

The resolution — titled “Strengthening Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes” — reaffirms member states’ commitment to the UN Charter, particularly Chapter VI, and calls for greater use of diplomatic tools such as mediation, arbitration, judicial settlement, and regional cooperation to prevent conflicts and promote sustainable peace.

Addressing the Council, Senator Dar emphasized the critical need to shift from a reactive to a preventive approach in international diplomacy. “The world cannot afford more wars; our collective responsibility lies in dialogue, not confrontation,” he stated.

The resolution urges member states to:

  • Effectively utilize Article 33 mechanisms including negotiation, mediation, and conciliation;
  • Take measures to ensure the implementation of Security Council decisions on dispute resolution;
  • Support and cooperate with the UN Secretary-General’s preventive diplomacy efforts;
  • Strengthen regional and subregional cooperation in mediation and peacebuilding;
  • Promote inclusive peace processes, ensuring the meaningful participation of women and youth.

It further calls for the United Nations Secretariat to bolster its mediation capacity by maintaining a diverse and well-trained pool of experts and encourages regional organizations to share best practices and lessons learned.

Importantly, the resolution mandates the UN Secretary-General to present concrete recommendations within a year to further reinforce existing mechanisms, and for the Security Council to convene an open debate to assess progress.

The adoption of the resolution comes as Pakistan advocates for multilateral conflict resolution amid a complex and evolving global security landscape. It also highlights Pakistan’s active role in promoting preventive diplomacy and international peace.

The resolution received strong backing from all 15 Council members, signaling broad consensus on the need to prioritize peaceful means of dispute resolution over the use of force.

Senator Dar concluded by expressing Pakistan’s readiness to work with all UN member states to promote peace, stability, and justice through dialogue and cooperation, calling it “a collective investment in the future of humanity.”
