RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, March 3, 2026 (WNP): The Embassy of the United States, Riyadh was struck early Tuesday by suspected Iranian drones, causing a fire and limited structural damage to the diplomatic compound in Saudi Arabia’s capital, authorities said, in a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Gulf region.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that two drones hit the embassy area in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, leading to a “small fire” and minor material damage to the building. No injuries have been reported, and the mission was reportedly unoccupied at the time of the attack.
Witnesses reported hearing loud explosions and seeing black smoke rising over the diplomatic district early Tuesday, underscoring the widening conflict that has spread across the Middle East following Iranian retaliatory strikes after recent U.S.–Israeli military operations against Iran.
In response to the incident, the U.S. Embassy issued a shelter-in-place advisory for American citizens in key Saudi cities including Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran, urging them to avoid the embassy vicinity and take necessary precautions for their safety.
The State Department has not yet released a detailed statement on the extent of damage or a formal condemnation, but U.S. officials have signalled heightened concern over the attacks on diplomatic and military facilities in the region.
The strike on the U.S. Embassy comes amid unprecedented regional hostilities, with Iran launching ballistic missile and drone attacks against multiple countries hosting U.S. forces and interests, including Bahrain, Iraq, the UAE and Kuwait. These actions followed a joint U.S.–Israeli offensive inside Iran that reportedly resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — a claim initially denied by Tehran but later confirmed by state media.
U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the military campaign may be protracted, with defensive operations continuing across the region.
The attack on the embassy highlights the dangerous spillover of the conflict into diplomatic spaces traditionally considered secure. Saudi air defences have also intercepted multiple drones near Riyadh and other areas, according to official releases.
The evolving situation has led to increased tension among U.S. allies, airspace disruptions, and global calls for de-escalation even as military actions continue.
As developments unfold, updates from official U.S. and Saudi sources are expected in the coming hours.
