LONDON, Friday, May 8, 2026 (WNP): Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Keir Starmer on Friday acknowledged Labour Party losses in recent elections, describing the results as “very tough” while pledging to intensify efforts to deliver the change promised to voters.

Speaking after the results, Starmer said Labour had lost “brilliant representatives” across the country and admitted the outcome reflected public frustration over living conditions and the pace of change.

“The results are tough. They are very tough. And there is no sugarcoating this,” he said. “I take responsibility. When voters send a message like this, we must reflect and we must respond.”

Starmer said the British public understands the country is facing major economic and international challenges following years of economic shocks and global instability. However, he acknowledged that many voters still feel disappointed because they have not yet experienced the improvements they expected.

“They still want to see the change that we promised. They know the status quo is letting them down and they’re frustrated. They don’t feel the change,” he said.

The prime minister defended key decisions taken by his government, including measures aimed at stabilising public finances and investing in public services. He also referred to efforts to avoid deeper involvement in tensions related to Iran.

At the same time, Starmer admitted the government had made “unnecessary mistakes,” particularly in failing to convince the public that conditions would improve despite the difficult circumstances inherited by the administration.

“Although we were right to level with the public about the scale and depth of the challenges we faced, we didn’t do enough to convince them that things will get better,” he said.

Starmer announced that in the coming days he would outline further steps to deliver economic and social improvements for British citizens, including tackling poverty, strengthening communities, addressing the cost-of-living crisis, and ensuring safer living conditions.

He said the government remains committed to creating opportunities for young people and restoring public confidence in national institutions and local communities.

Despite the electoral setback, the British prime minister said the results had strengthened rather than weakened his determination to deliver on Labour’s promises.

“These are tough results. But tough days like this do not weaken my resolve to deliver the change that I promised at the general election. They strengthen my resolve,” he said.
