MOSCOW, Wednesday, April 8, 2026 (WNP): Russia has welcomed the agreement on the cessation of hostilities between the United States and Iran, reiterating its longstanding call for a ceasefire and renewed diplomatic engagement to resolve the conflict.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Moscow had consistently advocated for de-escalation since the early days of the conflict in the Middle East. “From the very first days of the destructive war, Russia has called for a ceasefire and the resumption of diplomatic efforts,” she said.

She noted that Russia had actively worked toward this objective, including within the framework of the United Nations Security Council, while maintaining close coordination with other responsible members of the international community.

Zakharova also highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating the breakthrough, stating that “the positive mediating role of Islamabad deserves special recognition.”

Emphasizing the need for a comprehensive settlement, she said serious negotiations still lie ahead to achieve a lasting resolution based on respect for the legitimate rights and interests of all states in the region.

“The outcome must guarantee the non-recurrence of such military crises,” she stressed, describing them as “man-made and unprovoked.”

Reaffirming Moscow’s commitment, Zakharova said Russia would continue to actively contribute to efforts aimed at ensuring long-term peace and security in the region.
