ISLAMABAD, Tuesday, April 21, 2026 (WNP): Russia is not acting as a direct mediator in the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran, but continues to support diplomatic efforts and maintain close regional consultations, Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev said in remarks published by the Russian newspaper Izvestia.
Responding to a question on Moscow’s role, Khorev clarified that while Russia is not directly mediating, it has been actively working to prevent further escalation following “unprovoked armed aggression” by the United States and Israel against Iran.
He said the Russian leadership has remained in constant contact with key regional partners, including Iran, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, in a bid to de-escalate tensions.
Emphasizing Moscow’s stance, the envoy reiterated the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities, particularly actions affecting civilian infrastructure and causing hardship in Gulf states.
Khorev further reaffirmed Russia’s full support for the continuation of political and diplomatic engagement between United States and Iran, noting that Pakistan is playing a mediatory role in facilitating dialogue.
On bilateral coordination, the ambassador said Moscow and Islamabad remain in regular contact regarding developments in the Middle East, as well as a range of regional and global issues.
He added that Russia values Pakistan’s constructive role in providing a platform conducive to Iranian-American engagement and expressed hope that all parties would adopt a responsible approach to achieve a long-term settlement.
