PM reviews regional security, evacuation of Pakistanis from Iran

ISLAMABAD, Sunday, March 1, 2026 (WNP) : Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday chaired a meeting to review the evolving regional and national security situation, with a particular focus on developments relating to Iran, Afghanistan and India, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The meeting was attended by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, and Lieutenant General Asim Malik, Pakistan’s National Security Adviser and Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Senior federal ministers and top civil and military officials were also present.

Participants conducted a comprehensive assessment of the regional landscape, discussing peace and stability in the broader neighbourhood. The situation in Afghanistan came under detailed review, alongside an extensive briefing on Pakistan’s internal security arrangements.

On the Prime Minister’s directives, progress on the evacuation of Pakistani citizens from Iran was also examined.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the meeting that efforts were underway to facilitate the safe return of Pakistanis through Azerbaijan, amid heightened tensions in the region.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir attended the meeting along with federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Mohsin Naqvi, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Ahad Khan Cheema, Attaullah Tarar, Ali Pervaiz Malik and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, in addition to other senior officials.

The leadership reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace, national security and the protection of its citizens at home and abroad, the ISPR statement said.
