MOSCOW, Saturday, September 5, 2026 (WNP): Moscow is celebrating its 879th City Day, marking the centuries-old history, cultural heritage and continuing transformation of the Russian capital into a modern global metropolis.

The Embassy of Russia in Pakistan extended its heartfelt congratulations to Moscow on the anniversary, describing the city as the heart of Russia whose history, culture and traditions have played a central role in shaping the country.

Historical records contain the first known reference to Moscow in 1147, when it was still a small settlement. Over the centuries, the city has developed into a dynamic metropolis with a population of more than 13 million people, playing a central role in Russia’s political, cultural, scientific and educational life.

According to the Embassy, Moscow City Day provides an opportunity to honour the capital’s rich historical legacy and cultural heritage while also looking toward its future.

The Russian capital has continued to combine its centuries-old traditions with modern urban development, evolving into a smart and technologically advanced city while preserving its distinctive historical character.

A wide range of celebrations are being held across Moscow on September 5 and 6, with more than 100 events organised to mark the city’s 879th anniversary.

The celebrations highlight Moscow’s cultural heritage, historic landmarks and vibrant urban life, while showcasing the city’s ongoing development and modernisation.

The Embassy said the anniversary represents not only a celebration of Moscow’s remarkable past but also a message of confidence in its bright future.

“Happy anniversary, dear Moscow!” the Embassy said, conveying its warm wishes to the Russian capital on its 879th anniversary.
