FUJAIRAH, United Arab Emirates, March 3, 2026 (WNP): A major fire and explosion broke out at the port and oil industry zone of Fujairah on Tuesday following the impact of debris from an intercepted Iranian drone, officials confirmed, highlighting the widening fallout of regional hostilities in the Gulf.

Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising over one of the UAE’s key maritime and energy hubs after fragments from a downed unmanned aerial vehicle landed in the area, sparking fires that quickly engulfed storage and infrastructure facilities.

Civil defence teams responded to contain the blaze, and authorities later reported that the situation was under control.

The UAE Media Office said the fire occurred in the Fujairah oil industry zone, a critical node for regional fuel storage and distribution, following debris from a drone interception — rather than a direct missile hit — although the resulting damage prompted temporary disruption of port activities.

The incident comes amid unprecedented Iranian drone and missile strikes across the Gulf — part of Tehran’s continued retaliation in the wider conflict triggered by the joint U.S.–Israeli military offensive earlier this week. Iranian projectiles have targeted multiple Gulf states, including the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, resulting in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage despite extensive air defence interceptions.

In recent days, the UAE has reported at least three civilian deaths and dozens of injuries due to falling debris from intercepted drones, with black smoke previously seen rising over Dubai’s Jebel Ali port and other facilities.

UAE authorities have condemned the attacks as violations of sovereignty and international law, reiterating their right to protect national security and urging residents to follow official guidance. The country also recently closed its embassy in Tehran and recalled its ambassador in response to Iranian strikes, underscoring the diplomatic rupture accompanying escalating violence.

Emergency response officials emphasised that, while the fire in Fujairah was contained, the incident underscores ongoing risks to civilian infrastructure in the region and the challenges posed by the expanding conflict.

The situation remains highly fluid, with government and international agencies closely monitoring developments as diplomatic and military tensions escalate.
