Iraqi President, Iranian FM Araghchi stress diplomacy to preserve regional stability

BAGHDAD, Sunday, June 28, 2026 (WNP): Iraqi President Nizar Amidi and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Sunday underscored the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving regional disputes and preserving peace and stability during high-level talks in Baghdad.

According to a statement issued by the Iraqi Presidency, the two leaders reviewed the latest regional and international developments, efforts to prevent further escalation in the Middle East, and the recent agreement between Iran and the United States aimed at ending hostilities.

President Amidi emphasized that dialogue remains the most effective path to fostering a stable regional environment, reaching lasting understandings on contentious issues, and safeguarding regional security.

He reaffirmed Iraq’s support for initiatives that promote regional peace, uphold the sovereignty of states, and resolve disputes through diplomatic engagement rather than confrontation and the use of force.

The Iraqi president also stressed the need for continued cooperation among regional countries to address common challenges and strengthen stability across the Middle East.

Foreign Minister Araghchi expressed appreciation for Iraq’s constructive role in helping contain regional crises and facilitating efforts to narrow differences among regional actors.

He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to maintaining close coordination and consultations with the Iraqi leadership while expanding bilateral cooperation and enhancing mutual understanding on regional developments.

The meeting reflected the shared determination of Baghdad and Tehran to support diplomatic initiatives, encourage dialogue, and work together in promoting lasting peace, security and stability across the region.
