MOSCOW, Wednesday, August 12, 2026 (WNP/ RIA Novosti): Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has signed a decree declaring a state of disaster across the country following a powerful earthquake, El Tiempo newspaper reported on Wednesday.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Monday, with its epicentre located near the municipality of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department.

The powerful tremors were felt across large parts of Colombia and in neighbouring countries, prompting emergency response measures and raising concerns over further damage and possible aftershocks.

The declaration of a state of disaster is expected to facilitate the mobilisation of emergency resources and government agencies to support affected communities and respond to the consequences of the earthquake.
