Pakistan, Malaysia agree to deepen strategic partnership, expand economic cooperation

PUTRAJAYA, Monday, October 6, 2025 (WNP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, who is on an official visit to Malaysia, held a comprehensive meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya on Monday, reaffirming the two countries’ commitment to strengthening their longstanding bilateral relations.

Upon arrival, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was received with an official welcome ceremony, followed by a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The two leaders later led their respective delegations in wide-ranging talks focused on expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

The Pakistani Prime Minister expressed gratitude to his Malaysian counterpart for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him and his delegation.

During the talks, both leaders reviewed the steady progress in bilateral relations since Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Pakistan in October 2024, and expressed satisfaction over the growing cooperation between the two countries. They agreed to further enhance economic, trade, and investment ties through stronger institutional linkages and new partnerships.

The two sides discussed collaboration in diverse fields including information technology, telecommunications, the halal industry, automotive manufacturing, connectivity, renewable and green energy, electrical and electronic production, tourism, higher education, climate resilience, and agriculture.

In a key development, both countries agreed to enhance Pakistan’s halal meat export quota to Malaysia to USD 200 million, while expressing satisfaction over Pakistan’s rice exports, which have already surpassed their existing quota.

The leaders also exchanged views on major regional and international issues, including the situation in the Middle East. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in efforts toward peace in Palestine.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s principled position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute and expressed gratitude for Malaysia’s consistent support for a peaceful resolution in line with United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation at multilateral forums such as the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), particularly in addressing the shared challenges facing the Islamic world.

They also discussed ways to advance Pakistan–ASEAN engagement. Congratulating Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Malaysia’s assumption of the ASEAN Chair, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Malaysia for reaffirming its support for Pakistan’s bid to become a Full Dialogue Partner of ASEAN.

Following the talks, both leaders witnessed the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering cooperation in diplomatic training, tourism, halal certification, higher education, anti-corruption measures, and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

On the occasion, the two Prime Ministers jointly launched the Urdu translation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s book “SCRIPT,” which outlines his vision and philosophy of leadership.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim later hosted a special luncheon in honour of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his delegation.

The visit, marked by warmth and mutual respect, is expected to further deepen Pakistan–Malaysia relations and open new avenues for partnership in trade, technology, and regional development.
