ISLAMABAD, Thursday, July 31, 2025 (WNP): Pakistan has joined hands with Ethiopia in the “Renewal Through Planting” campaign – a monumental effort that saw 700 million seedlings planted in a single day as part of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative in a powerful show of global environmental solidarity.
The joint plantation drive was marked with a ceremonial event and media briefing at the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad, bringing together a wide cross-section of society — from government and diplomatic circles to religious leaders, youth, and civil society.
Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, served as chief guest, while Hamid Asghar Khan, Additional Secretary (Africa) from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, participated as guest of honor.
Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, Dr. Jemal Beker, briefed participants on the far-reaching objectives of the Green Legacy Initiative, launched in 2019 by Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed. The campaign aims to combat deforestation, mitigate climate change, reduce soil erosion, enhance food security, and promote sustainable development across Africa and beyond.
“Pakistan’s participation in this campaign sends a clear message: we are united in our efforts to tackle climate change,” Ambassador Beker said. He lauded Pakistan for embracing the spirit of the Green Legacy and called it a new chapter in bilateral climate diplomacy.
Dr. Musadik Malik praised the Ethiopian leadership for its visionary green agenda and applauded Ambassador Beker’s dynamic outreach in promoting eco-consciousness throughout Pakistan. “This partnership is more than symbolic — it reflects a shared commitment to planetary well-being,” the minister remarked.
In a significant development, a high-level Ethiopian delegation comprising climate experts and government officials is expected to visit Pakistan soon for a series of ‘Green Dialogues’ and collaborative plantation drives across the country.
The event concluded with an enthusiastic reaffirmation of Pakistan and Ethiopia’s resolve to work together toward a greener, more climate-resilient future — not just for their own people, but for the planet as a whole.
