ISLAMABAD, Wednesday, May 21, 2025 (WNP): Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong on Wednesday reaffirmed Beijing’s unwavering support for Islamabad in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, as the two nations marked the 74th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Speaking at a commemorative event in Islamabad, Ambassador Jiang highlighted China’s continued backing of Pakistan’s development path, counter-terrorism efforts, and national unity, saying the two countries had set a global example of a resilient and enduring bilateral relationship.

“Since May 21, 1951, when China and Pakistan formally established diplomatic ties, our bond has blossomed into an all-weather strategic partnership,” said the envoy. “Our two nations enjoy a high level of mutual trust, with leaders maintaining close interactions.”

He noted that in less than a year, both prime ministers exchanged visits, while President Asif Ali Zardari’s successful trip to China further deepened bilateral cooperation. “These high-level exchanges vividly demonstrate the extraordinary friendship between our countries,” Ambassador Jiang stated.

Referring to recent developments, the Chinese diplomat said President Xi Jinping and Pakistani leadership had reached significant consensus to accelerate progress under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), with a renewed focus on economic integration and social development.

“China has remained Pakistan’s largest trading partner for ten consecutive years,” he added, pointing to deepening collaboration in agriculture, mining, new energy, cross-border e-commerce, and infrastructure under the “upgraded” phase of CPEC.

Highlighting key achievements, the ambassador cited the operationalization of the Gwadar International Airport, the year-round opening of Khunjerab Pass, and ongoing training of 1,000 Pakistani agricultural professionals in China. He also noted the recent distribution of 278 sets of agricultural machinery and 50,000 health kits to support Pakistan’s development.

Ambassador Jiang emphasized that both countries would continue to coordinate closely on multilateral platforms such as the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to uphold the interests of the Global South and advocate for an inclusive world order.

Condemning the terrorist attack in Khuzdar, Balochistan, earlier in the day, which claimed six lives including four children, Ambassador Jiang expressed deep sorrow and solidarity. “China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism and supports Pakistan in safeguarding social stability and the safety of its people,” he said.

Speaker NA lauds ‘unbreakable bond’

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also addressed the reception and paid glowing tribute to the longstanding Pakistan-China relationship, calling it “higher than the mountains, deeper than the oceans, and sweeter than honey.”

In a heartfelt moment, he led a tribute to the victims of the Khuzdar tragedy, saying such acts of violence only strengthened the resolve of the two nations to stand together.

“The Pakistan-China friendship has withstood the test of time and emerged stronger with every challenge,” he said. “Even in sorrow, we draw strength from our unity.”

Sardar Sadiq lauded China’s contributions to Pakistan’s development and defence, noting the strategic importance of military cooperation, including the induction of advanced Chinese technologies such as the JF-17 Thunder and J-10C fighter jets.

Looking ahead, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the second phase of CPEC, which aims to broaden cooperation in agriculture, information technology, mining, and climate resilience. He also expressed optimism about the anticipated visit of the Chinese Premier, calling it a key step toward institutionalizing people-to-people ties.

President Zardari reaffirms strategic partnership

Separately, President Asif Ali Zardari extended his congratulations to the people and governments of both nations, describing China as Pakistan’s “iron brother” and reaffirming Islamabad’s adherence to the ‘One China’ policy.

“Pakistan’s relationship with China remains a cornerstone of our foreign policy,” the president said in a message marking the anniversary. “Over the past seven decades, our bilateral ties have evolved into a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.”

He expressed gratitude for China’s continued support in times of crisis and praised its contributions to Pakistan’s economic and social sectors, particularly through CPEC. “Our partnership is built on mutual trust, goodwill, and shared aspirations for regional peace and connectivity,” he stated.

President Zardari also voiced hope for further strengthening ties in key areas such as trade, technology, defence, and education.
