ADDIS ABABA, Wednesday, April 8, 2026 (WNP): The African Union Commission has welcomed the announcement of an immediate ceasefire between Iran, the United States, and their respective allies, terming it a significant step towards de-escalation and global stability.

Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said the development reflects “commendable leadership and a shared commitment to de-escalation,” particularly acknowledging the diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan.

He noted that the ceasefire aligns with the African Union’s consistent calls for restraint and peaceful resolution of conflicts, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over confrontation.

The Chairperson commended the constructive roles played by key mediators, including Pakistan, Oman, Türkiye, and Egypt, whose coordinated diplomatic engagement helped secure the agreement.

Highlighting the global repercussions of the conflict, Youssouf said its impact had been felt across Africa, where disruptions in fuel supplies contributed to rising inflation and increased the cost of basic commodities. “This ceasefire presents a critical opportunity to ease the suffering of populations affected both directly and indirectly,” he added.

Reaffirming support for ongoing diplomatic initiatives, the Chairperson expressed full backing for the Islamabad Talks and urged all parties to maintain momentum towards a durable and comprehensive peace. He stressed that sustained dialogue and inclusive diplomacy, in line with the United Nations Charter, remain the only viable path to resolving international crises.
