WASHINGTON/ISLAMABAD, Wednesday, April 8, 2026 (WNP): U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran following high-level engagements with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, describing the development as a significant step toward long-term peace in the Middle East.
In posts shared on Truth Social, President Trump said he had agreed to suspend planned military action against Iran for a period of two weeks, subject to Tehran ensuring the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz. He termed the move a “double-sided ceasefire,” aimed at allowing diplomacy to finalize a broader peace agreement.
Trump said the decision followed direct conversations with Pakistan’s leadership, who urged restraint to create space for negotiations. He added that the United States had already achieved its military objectives and was now “very far along” in reaching a definitive agreement with Iran.

The U.S. president revealed that Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he described as a “workable basis” for negotiations, noting that most contentious issues between the two sides had already been addressed.
In a separate post, Trump expressed optimism about the broader regional outlook, calling it a “big day for world peace.” He said Iran appeared ready to move toward reconstruction and stability, while the United States would assist in easing congestion and ensuring safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route.
“We’ll be loading up with supplies of all kinds, and just ‘hanging around’ to make sure everything goes well,” Trump stated, adding that the developments could usher in a “Golden Age of the Middle East.”
The announcement comes amid intensified diplomatic efforts involving Pakistan, which has been actively engaging key stakeholders to de-escalate tensions and facilitate dialogue between Washington and Tehran.

The proposed two-week ceasefire could provide a crucial window for finalizing a long-term agreement, potentially marking a turning point in efforts to stabilize the region.
