MOSCOW, Tuesday, March 10, 2026 (WNP): Russian President Vladimir Putin has instructed the Russian government to evaluate the possibility of halting energy exports to Europe in response to upcoming restrictions on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and energy supplies.

President Putin said European Union countries plan to impose additional restrictions on Russian energy starting April 25, which could culminate in a complete ban by 2028. He stressed that Russia should not wait for these measures to take effect, warning that the country should act proactively rather than “wait for the door to be shut in our face.”

“If we redirect our energy volumes now to markets that are truly interested and need increased supplies, we can secure a stable foothold in regions with reliable long-term demand and constructive partnerships,” Putin said.

The Russian president outlined that the government’s evaluation would focus on shifting LNG and energy exports to markets that are more promising and strategically beneficial. He emphasized that the current global market conditions are favorable for making such a transition, allowing Russia to strengthen relationships with countries willing to build long-term and reliable energy partnerships.

Analysts say this move signals Moscow’s intent to counter EU energy restrictions, diversify its export destinations, and maintain its influence in global energy markets amid rising geopolitical tensions.

President Putin’s remarks come amid the ongoing Europe-Russia energy standoff, which has escalated following a series of EU sanctions and planned restrictions on Russian energy as part of broader geopolitical disputes.
