MANILA, Monday, June 8, 2026 (WNP): A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines on Monday morning, causing widespread devastation across Mindanao.
The quake triggered multiple building collapses in General Santos City, prompted tsunami warnings in parts of Asia, and left at least 19 people dead and more than 200 injured, according to officials and media reports.
Images circulating on social media showed severely damaged commercial buildings, collapsed structures, and debris-strewn streets as emergency responders raced to rescue residents trapped beneath the rubble. Authorities fear the death toll could rise as search-and-rescue operations continue and more victims are located.
Rescue teams remained deployed across several affected areas amid concerns that additional survivors may still be trapped under collapsed buildings. Officials cautioned that casualty figures were preliminary and could increase as damage assessments and recovery efforts progress. Authorities have gradually lifted some tsunami warnings, although the situation remains under close monitoring.
Philippine President ordered emergency response measures and directed disaster management agencies to provide immediate relief and assistance to affected communities. Schools were closed in several parts of Mindanao, while authorities urged residents to stay alert, avoid damaged structures, and follow safety advisories.
Seismologists warned that strong aftershocks could continue for several days and advised people in affected regions to remain vigilant as emergency teams work to restore normalcy across southern Philippines.
