KUALA LUMPUR, Friday, June 20, 2025 (WNP): Pakistan booked their place in the final of the FIH Men’s Nations Cup after edging past France 3–2 in a dramatic penalty shootout, following a nail-biting 3–3 draw in regulation time in the tournament’s first semifinal on Friday.

The high-octane clash in Kuala Lumpur saw both sides fiercely contesting the opening stages. Despite aggressive play in the first and second quarters, neither side managed to break the deadlock due to strong defensive lines and goalkeeping.

France finally drew first blood when Smenjaud Xavier expertly deflected the ball into the net. Their momentum continued in the third quarter as Charlet Victor extended the lead with a sharp flick, leaving Pakistan trailing 2–0.

But the Green Shirts responded with remarkable resilience. Afraz ignited the comeback with a well-timed goal, narrowing the deficit. In a stunning twist late in the third quarter, Sufyan Khan and Muhammad Hammadudin struck in quick succession to put Pakistan ahead 3–2.

However, France were not done yet. With just three minutes remaining, Charlet converted a crucial penalty corner to level the score, forcing the match into a decisive shootout.

In the penalty shootout, Pakistan held their nerve with Afraz, Shahid Hannan, and Rana Waheed converting their shots, while France faltered, missing three of their five attempts.

President Asif Ali Zardari, in a statement, applauded the team’s exceptional performance, passion, and teamwork, calling the victory a proud moment that has lifted the nation’s spirits. “This triumph is a moment of pride and joy for the entire country,” he said.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif also congratulated the team and the nation, commending the players and coaching staff for their dedication and performance throughout the tournament. “The national team has made the country proud and won our hearts,” he said, expressing confidence that Pakistan is on its way to reclaiming its past hockey glory.

The nation now turns its eyes to Saturday’s final, hopeful that the Green Shirts will complete their journey with a championship victory.
