ROME, Friday, May 8, 2026 (WNP): Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday paid tribute to Pope Leo XIV, describing his message of faith, peace, and dialogue as a global point of reference during a time of growing uncertainty and international tensions.
In a statement marking one year since the election of Pope Leo XIV, Meloni recalled the moment when white smoke rose above the Sistine Chapel, announcing to the world the selection of the successor to Saint Peter.
“‘We have a Pope.’ One year ago, the white smoke over the Sistine Chapel announced to the world that the Church had chosen Peter’s successor,” she said.
The Italian prime minister renewed her gratitude to Pope Leo XIV for his tireless efforts in promoting faith, hope, peace, dialogue among peoples, and solidarity with the poor and vulnerable.
“In a complex time marked by great uncertainties, his voice represents a global point of reference, for Christians and not only,” Meloni said.
She praised the pontiff’s continued commitment to fostering understanding among nations and communities, emphasizing the importance of moral and spiritual leadership amid ongoing global challenges.
