Iraqi PM, Iranian FM Araghchi discuss regional peace, strengthening bilateral ties

BAGHDAD, Sunday, June 28, 2026 (WNP): Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi and Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Sunday reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and supporting regional diplomatic initiatives aimed at enhancing peace, security and stability across the Middle East.

During a meeting in Baghdad, the two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on the latest regional and international developments, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office.

 

Prime Minister al-Zaidi welcomed the ongoing diplomatic process aimed at ending conflicts in the region, stressing that Iraq supports prioritizing dialogue and peaceful engagement as the most effective means of resolving disputes and promoting long-term regional stability.

The discussions also focused on the recent agreement between Iran and the United States that brought an end to hostilities between the two countries, as well as broader international and regional efforts to strengthen security, uphold national sovereignty and preserve the unity and territorial integrity of states.

Foreign Minister Araghchi reaffirmed Iran’s continued support for Iraq and emphasized the importance of sustained coordination and joint efforts to further expand bilateral relations across political, economic and security sectors.

He underscored Tehran’s commitment to enhancing cooperation with Baghdad in support of regional peace, stability and constructive dialogue.

Earlier in the day, Araghchi arrived in the Iraqi capital on an official visit, where he first held talks with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein before meeting Prime Minister al-Zaidi.

The visit also includes meetings with senior Iraqi leaders to discuss bilateral cooperation, regional security, recent diplomatic developments and arrangements related to forthcoming funeral ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader.

Araghchi’s visit reflects the close strategic partnership between Iran and Iraq and the two countries’ shared commitment to advancing dialogue, strengthening cooperation and supporting diplomatic efforts to foster lasting peace and stability throughout the region.
