At a ceremony held locally, 80 solar home systems were distributed to deserving beneficiaries of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). The initiative, aimed at improving electricity access in underserved communities, is being implemented by the Sindh Rural Support Organization (SRSO).
The event drew the participation of several key officials, including Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh, Shikarpur District Council Chairman Zulfiqar Ali Khan Kamario, Additional Deputy Commissioner Zafar Abbas, and Rais Gul Muhammad, Environmental and Social Development Officer of the Sindh Solar Energy Project.
Speaking at the event, MPA Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh underscored the significance of the initiative, stating that the project is designed to expand solar energy adoption and enhance access to electricity for low-income households across Sindh.
“This project is aligned with the Sindh government’s broader agenda of promoting renewable energy and reducing dependence on conventional power sources,” he said.
Backed by $100 million in funding from the World Bank, the Sindh Solar Energy Project aims to deploy 200,000 solar home systems in rural areas with limited or no access to electricity. The initiative represents a strategic push to combat energy poverty while contributing to environmental sustainability in the province.
