Prime Minister appreciates Yahya’s contribution to Pakistan-UN cooperation, congratulates him on new UN humanitarian affairs appointment

ISLAMABAD, Wednesday, August 19, 2026 (WNP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday received United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan Mohamed Yahya for a farewell call and appreciated his contribution to strengthening Pakistan-UN cooperation during his tenure.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the continued support extended by the UN Country Team to Pakistan’s development and humanitarian priorities, particularly in climate resilience, sustainable development and disaster response.

He recalled with appreciation the United Nations’ role in mobilizing international support for Pakistan, particularly following the devastating floods of 2022.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Mohamed Yahya on his appointment as Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), describing it as a fitting recognition of his experience and commitment.

He wished Yahya continued success in his new assignment and expressed confidence that Pakistan’s close partnership with the United Nations would continue to grow.

Thanking the Prime Minister for his appreciation, Mohamed Yahya expressed gratitude for the cooperation extended to him and the UN Country Team by the Government of Pakistan throughout his tenure.

He reaffirmed the United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development and humanitarian agenda.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi and other senior government officials were also present during the meeting.
