ROME, Friday, June 19, 2026 (WNP): A fresh diplomatic dispute has erupted between the United States and Italy after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni had “begged” him for a photograph during the recent G7 Summit, prompting a sharp public rebuttal from the Italian leader and escalating tensions between the two allies.
Speaking during a telephone interview with an Italian television programme, President Trump alleged that Prime Minister Meloni had repeatedly requested a photograph with him at the G7 gathering.
Prime Minister Meloni strongly rejected the claim, describing President Trump’s remarks as “completely made up” and expressing surprise at what she characterized as his treatment of longstanding allies.
“President Trump’s words are pure fantasy,” Meloni said, adding that neither she nor Italy had ever begged anyone for anything. She also questioned why the U.S. president appeared to adopt a harsher tone toward allies than toward what she described as the enemies of the West.
The exchange has triggered one of the most public disagreements in recent years between Washington and Rome, overshadowing what had appeared to be improving relations between the two leaders following their meetings at the G7 Summit.
Underscoring Italy’s displeasure, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the cancellation of his planned visit to the United States, describing President Trump’s comments as offensive not only to the prime minister but to Italy as a whole. Senior Italian officials also publicly defended Meloni and criticized the remarks.
Political observers said the episode marked a significant deterioration in relations between two leaders who had previously maintained close political ties, raising questions about the future direction of U.S.-Italy cooperation on key international issues.
