MANAMA, Tuesday, May 5, 2026 (WNP): King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, focusing on regional security dynamics in the Middle East and the Gulf, alongside expanding bilateral cooperation in defence, economy, and diplomacy.
Describing the meeting as “good and productive,” Zelenskyy said the discussions covered the evolving security landscape, including recent developments in the Gulf region, tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, and broader regional challenges.
He said both sides exchanged views on security risks, including Iran’s strikes against Bahrain and other countries, while also drawing parallels with Ukraine’s ongoing security situation.
Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine, which faces frequent attacks, has developed significant experience in defence against such threats and expressed readiness to share its expertise with Bahrain.
“Our country is facing similar terrorist strikes almost every day, and our people have relevant experience in full-scale defence,” he said, adding that Ukraine is prepared to cooperate with Bahrain in strengthening protection mechanisms, including proposed collaboration on drone technology.
He said both sides discussed a potential “Drone Deal,” with technical teams expected to work on the modalities of cooperation.
The two leaders also focused on enhancing bilateral economic relations, particularly in agriculture and food production sectors, where both countries see untapped potential for partnership.
Zelenskyy briefed the Bahraini King on the situation in Ukraine and ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving what he described as a “dignified peace.”
The talks also touched on the possibility of opening embassies in both countries, a step both sides view as important for deepening diplomatic engagement.
Zelenskyy said the meeting underscored significant potential for expanding Ukraine–Bahrain relations across multiple dimensions, adding that both sides agreed to work toward realizing these opportunities through continued engagement.
