STOCKHOLM, Wednesday, April 8, 2026 (WNP): Sweden on Wednesday welcomed the agreement on a two-week mutual ceasefire between the United States and Iran, describing it as a positive step towards de-escalation and regional stability.
In a statement, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs acknowledged the role of international mediation efforts, including those by Pakistan, in facilitating the agreement.
It noted that the ceasefire could help create conditions for the restoration of free passage through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The ministry stressed the importance of restraint by all parties involved. “It is vital that all parties now exercise maximum restraint – to safeguard security in the region, to secure vital global supply chains and to protect innocent civilians,” the statement said.
Sweden underscored the need to build on the ceasefire to achieve a long-term and sustainable solution. It emphasized preventing nuclear proliferation and addressing activities that could destabilize the region and beyond.
Highlighting the global significance of maritime security, the ministry said ensuring freedom of navigation remains a priority for many countries, including Sweden, as it is essential for the smooth functioning of international trade.
The statement further noted that Sweden is participating in a multilateral initiative involving around 30 countries, launched by the United Kingdom, to discuss conditions necessary for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Sweden reaffirmed its readiness to support these efforts, including through political and diplomatic means.
