BERLIN, Monday, March 16, 2026 (WNP): German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has rejected calls from Donald Trump for military support in the ongoing confrontation with Iran, emphasizing that Germany favors diplomacy and de-escalation rather than direct involvement in the conflict.

Speaking during discussions on the rapidly escalating situation in the Middle East, Pistorius made clear that Berlin does not intend to commit military forces to operations connected to the conflict involving Israel and Iran. He stressed that the priority for Germany and its European partners remains preventing a wider regional war through political and diplomatic channels.

The remarks came after Washington urged several allies to provide military assistance, including naval deployments aimed at securing key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by the ongoing conflict.

However, Germany joined a number of European countries that declined to send forces, arguing that escalation could further destabilize the region.

Pistorius also downplayed concerns that Germany’s stance could weaken the unity of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, saying the alliance remains fundamentally defensive and that not every international crisis requires direct NATO military involvement.

European governments, including those of Spain and Italy, have similarly expressed reluctance to join military operations, instead calling for diplomatic engagement and coordinated international efforts to reduce tensions.

Analysts say the responses from several European capitals reflect growing caution among U.S. allies about being drawn into a broader Middle East conflict, particularly as the confrontation between Israel and Iran continues to escalate and global energy markets face disruption.

German officials reiterated that Berlin will continue to work with European and international partners to encourage dialogue and political solutions aimed at ending the crisis and restoring stability in the region.
