UNITED NATIONS, Wednesday, July 30, 2025 (WNP): In a bold declaration at the United Nations, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced that the United Kingdom will recognize the State of Palestine in September, unless Israel takes concrete steps to end the “appalling situation in Gaza” and commits to a viable two-state solution.

Speaking at a high-level UN conference in New York, Lammy said Britain’s historical role in the region gave it a “special burden of responsibility” to support the two-state framework as the only sustainable path to peace. His statement was met with applause from delegates, underlining the growing international frustration over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

“It is with the hand of history on our shoulders that His Majesty’s Government intends to recognize the State of Palestine when the UN General Assembly gathers in September,” Lammy declared.

He added that the UK will proceed with recognition unless Israel halts its military campaign, eases the humanitarian blockade on Gaza, and shows genuine commitment to a political process leading to two sovereign states.

Highlighting recent actions by the UK government, Lammy noted the resumption of funding to UNRWA, suspension of arms exports to Israel, sanctions on violent settlers, halting of trade talks with the Israeli government, and punitive measures against far-right Israeli ministers accused of incitement.

Despite these efforts, he said, the situation on the ground has deteriorated further. Lammy emphasized that Israel’s rejection of the two-state solution is “both morally and strategically wrong” and warned that continued inaction would only fuel instability.

“The time has come for decisive action. Recognition of Palestine is not the end of the road, but a vital step to keep hope for peace alive,” he said.

The announcement marks a significant shift in the UK’s Middle East policy and could signal broader international momentum toward Palestinian statehood if no diplomatic breakthrough occurs by September.
