ISLAMABAD, Sunday, May 11, 2025 (WNP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday lauded former U.S. President Donald J. Trump for his offer to play a more active role in promoting lasting peace in South Asia, particularly in the context of Pakistan-India tensions.

Taking to the social media platform X, the Prime Minister described President Trump’s remarks as a “most valuable offer” and praised his “pathbreaking leadership and commitment to global peace.”

“For decades, Pakistan and the U.S. have been close partners in promoting peace, security, and mutual interests in key regions of the world,” PM Sharif stated. “I am confident that in President Donald Trump, Pakistan has found a great partner who can reinvigorate our strategic partnership, particularly in trade, investment, and broader cooperation.”

The statement followed Trump’s remarks on Truth Social, where he applauded the leadership of both India and Pakistan for agreeing to halt hostilities, calling it a “historic and heroic decision” that potentially saved millions of innocent lives.

“I am very proud of the strong and unwaveringly powerful leadership of India and Pakistan,” Trump wrote. “It was time to stop the current aggression that could have led to the death and destruction of so many, and so much.”

Trump also signaled his intent to boost trade with both nations and expressed hope for progress on resolving the longstanding Jammu and Kashmir dispute. “After a thousand years, maybe a solution can be found,” he added.

In response, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed Trump’s statement and acknowledged the constructive role played by the United States, along with other friendly nations, in facilitating the recent ceasefire understanding between Pakistan and India — a move Islamabad views as a critical step toward de-escalation and regional stability.

“Pakistan appreciates President Trump’s willingness to support efforts aimed at the resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute,” the Foreign Office said. It reiterated that any settlement must align with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and ensure the inalienable right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination.

The Foreign Office further reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace and its readiness to engage with the U.S. and international community in promoting stability and prosperity in the region.

Islamabad also welcomed remarks by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the ceasefire, calling his support “a significant contribution” to regional peace. “Pakistan attaches high importance to the role of the United Nations in fostering peace and stability,” the ministry added, underscoring the need for dialogue grounded in the UN Charter and international law.
