JAKARTA, Saturday, December 13, 2025 (WNP): Indonesia is grappling with a deepening humanitarian crisis as the death toll from the devastating disaster in Sumatra has climbed to 990, according to the country’s disaster mitigation agency.

Authorities said more than 220 people remain missing, raising fears that the casualty figure could rise further as search and rescue operations continue in severely affected areas. Vast stretches of infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods have been destroyed, leaving nearly one million people displaced and in urgent need of shelter, food, and medical assistance.

Emergency response teams, supported by volunteers and the armed forces, are working around the clock amid challenging conditions to locate survivors and provide relief to affected communities. Temporary shelters have been set up across multiple districts, while hospitals struggle to cope with the influx of injured and displaced residents.

Officials estimate that $3.11 billion will be required for large-scale reconstruction and recovery, including rebuilding homes, restoring public infrastructure, and reviving local economies devastated by the catastrophe.

The Indonesian government has pledged to accelerate relief efforts and mobilize national resources, while also appealing for international support to help meet the growing humanitarian and reconstruction needs. As the nation mourns its losses, authorities stress that long-term recovery will require sustained commitment to rebuilding safer and more resilient communities across Sumatra.
